The 2011 Conference will begin on April 6, 2011 (Wednesday) at 6:00pm in the Cardnial Room at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Dr. Kurt Organista will  lead and facilitate a Special Presentation

The Latino Social Workers Organization provides one of the most important continuing education conferences focused on the Latino community  in North America.  The LSWO invites all human service professionals to consider this conference for their continuing education. Over the past 7 years, students, professionals and faculty have attended this conference.  Join us in Chicago, and learn new skills to bring back to your schools, community public and nonprofit agencies.

Celia J. Falicov, PhD, LSWO Leadership Award and Presenter

We are honored to have the presence of Celia J. Falicov, PhD. She is being recognized for her contributions to the profession and family therapy with Latinos. She is the author of the book, “Latino Families in Therapy: A Guide to Multicultural Practice.” She will be given this recognition on April 8, 2011, and will provide us a keynote presentation.

Dr. Lorraine Gutierrez from the University of Michigan School of Social Work and Dr. Kurt Organista from the University of California-Berkeley School of Social Welfare are the LSWO Co-Chairs for the 2011 Conference.

Dr. Lorraine Gutierrez, PhD, is a previous recipient of the LSWO Leadership Award, and her social work literature has been helpful to all social work professionals. We highly recommend her Council on Social Work Education publication, “Latinos and Social Work Education: A Bibliography and Annotations.” is a valuable resource book for your practice.

Dr. Kurt Organista, PhD, is author of a textbook which is timely, and needed in the Social Work Profession, “Solving Latino Psychosocial Problems and Health Problems: Theory, Practice, and Populations,” Dr. Organista will lead our Opening Night Networking Event on April 6, 2011 at 6pm. (Dinner is included with this evening event. (Bring your Business/Networking Cards)

On April 7, 2011, Pablo Arriaza, PhD from the University of New Hampshire School of Social Work and Fernando Palacios, PhD from Mercer University Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will present and lead a Panel Presentation on:

Sí, Of Course Hablo Español.” Self Perceived Language Abilities and Professional Needs of Spanish-speaking Social Workers.”

On April 7, 2011, Adriana Gonzalez, LCSW, Mayra Soto, LCSW (Latino Social Workers Behavioral Health and Consulting Services Inc.), Stephanie Basanez Notargiacomo, JD, (Law Offices Azita M. Morajad,  and Kim Kirksey, MSW (Catholic Charities, Tulsa, Oklahoma) will provide a Special Presentation on “Forensic Social Work: New Opportunities in the Social Work Profession.” This workshop will give private practitioners and agencies a framework for providing this specialty practice. This workshop will focus on immigration hardship evaluations. This field brings together social work and the legal profession to provide quality services to undocumented families.
